The Cure

Listening: The Cure – “PLAINSONG”
Heard this absolute CLASSIC in a bar last week and I just haven’t been able to stop replaying it. If I’m not mistaken the first time I heard it was in Marie Antoinette (2006) dir. by Sofia Coppola starring Kirsten THEE Dunst. I think this plays when she gets married or something, it’s a super monumental sounding track like there’s just so much drama and layers of ethereal splendour caked within. I’m getting tingly just writing about it. Good shout from Robert Smith – maybe I’ll make this my wedding song too, the other option is anything by the Cocteau Twins.

Watching: RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars S6
Our favourite, and perhaps most-hated, Queens are back on screen with the 6th (I know?!!) serving of All Star cast members from seasons past. As of last night’s double-whammy viewing on Netflix, I’m seeing Ra’Jah O’Hara, Kylie Sonique Love & either Eureka O’Hara or A’Keria at the end. I LOVE Yara Sofia too, but I just know those girls are gonna get her out before her time. Episode 2’s Janet Jackson lip-sync is the absolute tits, just so you know.

Memeing: Kim Woodburn x Matt Hancock

I am THEE Celebrity Big Brother fan, so this legendary Kim Woodburn moment seems most appropriate when addressing today’s political scandal. Big up the Queen of Clean!

Sad Night Dynamite

Doing: Angelina
Who knew dreams actually came true? And one day you’d find yourself face first in a plate of food conjured up only by fairytales? Dalston’s very own princess, Angelina, did – apparently. Fusing the irresistible flavours of Italian and Japanese cuisines into a distinctive melting pot of inimitable tasting menus, there’s nothing you won’t want to try once – or a million times over. The only catch? No one thinking of this delectable marriage sooner.

Watching: The Bold Type
If a gaping hole remains in your life after nothing quite beat the The Devil Wears Prada and Sex in the City’s wit, cynicism and fashion-centric ideals, look no further than hypnotic series centred around global magazine Scarlett, named The Bold Type, to refurbish your need for fashion closet talks, magazine scandals and mesmerising clothes. Warning: cancel your weekend plans and grab some popcorn: this is gonna be a big night in.

Listening: Sad Night Dynamite
Diving into the alt reality that is Sad Night Dynamite’s first mixtape is like swimming in a metallic pool upside down – it shouldn’t make sense, but somehow it feels just right. They break down and build up genres as if they’re simply building blocs there to be dismantled – merging country, hip-hop, dub, punk and electronic into their own clap-happy universe. FKA Twigs is already a firm fan.

Too Hot To Handle

Watching: Too Hot To Handle
COVID came for me this week and has left me stuck indoors. Luckily for me, Netflix felt my pain and released the new season of Too Hot To Handle. Boasting a brand new cast of hotties from all over the world, the show is the perfect dose of reality TV with wild sexual activities and insane revelations.

Going: Circus London
Before my quarantine began, I was lucky enough to head down to Covent Garden’s hidden cabaret restaurant and cocktail bar Circus London. Featuring a cast of unique, jaw-dropping and dangerous acts, the experience allows you to sip on some cocktails while enjoying a variety of fun-filled performances. Make sure you book a table for this place, because the best seats in the house are definitely the runway.

Listening: BXKS – “Must Feel”
I don’t know about you, but whenever I find new music from an underrated artist I get fiercely protective over them, but I have to let you in on BXKS. Seemingly popping out of nowhere, the rapper has taken over my playlist with her EP “Full-time Day Dreamer”, and I’m definitely craving some more.

Listening: Doja Cat’s Planet Her and Tyler, The Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost
Today has been a glorious day for new music. I have been on the edge of my seat whilst basking in the Wes Anderson-esque visual-filled run-up to Tyler, The Creator’s 6th studio album Call Me If You Get Lost, and it hasn’t disappointed. And, while I am not usually a Doja Cat stan, the sweet sounds of Planet Her has been blasting out of why speakers all day – especially “You Right” featuring the dreamy The Weeknd. Doja just dropped every anthem of hot girl summer of 2021.

Doing: Kensington Gardens
This WFH life has had me craving the joys of the outdoor world, so, in a bid to get in those necessary steps and some fresh air, I have been taking regular trips to London’s answers to the great outdoors. For this week’s trip, my housemate and I ventured into the pristinely paved maze of towering fern trees and quaint benches that make up Kensington Gardens. Tranquil and serene in nature, post-work catch-ups and brisk strolls surrounded by the vibrant flower beds and glassy bodies of water is the ultimate way to end the day.

Wearing: Isabel Marant x H&M bag
Having found this bag in the back of my wardrobe in the midst of a clear out, I instantly fell in love with it. Given to me back in 2013 when the collab dropped, the accessory hasn’t seen the light of day for quite some time. But, with its subtle white and grey tie-dye pattern and excessively large shape, it has become my go-to bag for my trips to the gym.

Watching: The Witches of the Orient
Take a bunch of factory workers in 1950s Post-War Osaka, their stranger-than-fiction transformation into the legendary Japanese national volleyball team that triumphed at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, mash it up with a killer soundtrack, TV archives, manga cartoons, as well as testimonies from the surviving players now in their seventies, and you get insanely cool sports documentary The Witches of the Orient. FYI, the title is inspired by their nickname in the press for their uninhibited supernatural powers on the court – it doesn’t get more riot grrrl than that.

Buying: A24 dog & cat collars
Not to be dramatic, but I’ve spent the last couple of days wailing since A24 debuted their pets merch on Cream Kim, the four-legged companion of Minari star Alan Kim. We are not worthy of boy, dog, and the collar and leash combos from the buzzy film distributor, available in pistachio green and lavender. Adding to basket for my future Bedlington Terrier as we speak.

Decorating: Leaf Envy
Moving house is like getting a wax before holiday, painful but altogether necessary. After 6 years in sunny east London, I’m finally swapping gorgeous E5 for pastures south in order to procure an actual garden with grass and a veggie patch, and also to, well, just grow the fuck up. One thing getting me through the chaotic process is the knowledge I can finally set my brand new Chinese money plant and specifically paired Leaf Envy pot down. The site curates pot choices based on your plant selection, and there’s contemporary styles available in five matte colours and three sizes, designed in Hackney and whipped up in Portugal by expert ceramicists. Plus, it comes cosied up in 100% recyclable packaging straight to your door. I’ve got the Dalston, in divine Burnt Brick with its own accompanying saucer.
