The last physical show by Gucci in February revealed the process and rituals behind the magic of fashion shows. This collection pushes that idea even further. Originally slated as a destination Cruise show, it is now called Gucci Epilogue—the closing of a chapter in which the brand will leave its calendar of five big shows a year for just two. In the accompanying film, Alessandro Michele lays bare his thoughts, his convictions, his uncertainties—and even his visual references, snapped on his phone.

Like much of Michele’s work, the video has a winkingly retro quality to it. Over surveillance-style footage taken from the collection’s campaign shoot at Rome’s Palazzo Sacchetti, a moving moodboard of text and images is played along with Michele’s musings. The lookbook images appeared as lo-fi pop-ups complete with Post-It annotations by Michele. In a tribute to the people who make the magic happen, the clothes were modelled by the design team.

The past couple of seasons have seen Michele employ relative restraint in his work. Here, he dials the exuberance of his vision and his magpie sensibilities all the way back up. The result was 76 looks that clashed prints and colours with wild abandon, all accessorised to the hilt—a smart move as the pieces truly popped when viewed on a screen.
